I went to iceland on my honeymoon and the first night there was a huge wind storm. I was given a ton of warnings like don’t let go of the door because the wind may rip it off and worse. On the drive from Keflavik airport to Reykjavik, we passed a car with trailer that had been completely blown off the road and another car with a destroyed front windshield from stones either kicked up or blow into it. A car also swerved into our lane and nearly hit us. The scariest part about it the two lane road only had a ditch on either side. I think they may have fallen asleep.
The next day I maxed out the insurance on my rental (Sandstorm, Iceland) and I’d recommend it for anyone who visits iceland. Also get the 112 app and send in your location if you are traveling around or doing any hiking. The weather can turn on a dime and you never know what will happen.
Also, for the love of god, don’t take anything but an SUV off of unpaved roads.
